watch some of the apartment finding shows on HGTV and you'll see a lot of people in tiny rooms with basically enough space for a Couch, a walkway, and a TV through their entertainment area.
The thing is, the people who live in those cramped quarters are typically the 18-25yo males who live in apartments rather than the 10-18 kids who still live at home with their parents (so long as their parents don't force them to play videogames in their bedroom) Also, people in the US tend to have much larger living spaces than those in other countries. So I wouldn't say 6-8ft of space isn't stretching it for a significant portion of their intended users.
As for TV size, if his couch is 5ft away, I would assume he is viewing the TV from 6ft away (you don't sit with your head at the front edge of the couch, but you don't stand on the couch either). But, at 5ft viewing distance, he would need a TV that is 32-38" for optimal viewing depending on how good his vision is.
