Microsoft disabled unlicensed memory cards.
Sony disabled unlicensed USB devices (seems to be excluding hard disk and flash drives)
Nintendo disabled the Action Replay and any other disc that was capable of circumventing their copyright protection system.
(note, I may be missing some instances of similar behavior)
How do they get away with it? They retain the rights to only allow licensed content to work with their machines. Yes, it sucks for the consumer, especially when it comes to controllers and memory cards that don't enable pirating, but it is within their legal rights.
