I'm really enjoying the game overall, but absolutely hate the forced scanning sections. If they make a sequel/followup I hate they remove these.

Look at the little bugs crawling on the ground - they're a ways off, brown, about the size of a football. Focus on them with B.

I had to hit the guide for that one, because i was watching it on a big-screen TV, but in letterboxed mode, so it was too small. They should have made it brightly colored, at least.
