Each level has a point system similar to that on previous Sonic games (where you get points and a ranking based on time, number of enemies defeated, rings, etc.), and these scores are put on a leaderboard to share with people around the world.
So in short, nothing really. 
However, Sonic Team said that there's still some surprises left to be shown. I wonder what they could be? :O
