From one perspective I agree with you, but as my sister (who has been a handheld gamer since the original Gameboy) said "The difference between Nintendo and their competitors is that Nintendo starts off selling their systems at a reasonable price; and doesn’t need price cuts"
If you consider that a Nintendo DSi is squeezed between an iPod Nano ($149) and the cheapest iPod Touch ($199) in price the price for a Nintendo DS does not seem that unreasonable; and when you factor in how inexpensive DS games are compared to console games it makes the system look like more of a bargain.
Personally, I would expect Nintendo to reduce the price of the DS and DSi to (closer to) your suggested prices when the 3DS launches; and if/when the 3DS launches for $179 to $199 it will make it look that much more reasonable because of how it relates to a Nintendo DSi that you would have paid the same amount to buy last year.
