i saw the title of this thread and thought the thread could easily be
"could this be nintendo's first big x'mas?"
except then i realized last year people were saying the exact same things after its launch. deja vu!
not much has changed from last year to this... and not much can change in the next year. if you must talk about games, it's not like the Nintendo doesn't make games. if Halo, Bioshock, COD4, Half Life 2: Orange Box etc couldn't even touch Wii, I don't see how MGS, GTA, FF can possibly do so. it's not like those game will sell to the hordes snatching up Wiis to begin with. indeed, the games that appeal to the Wii crowd only start coming out in earnest in 2008: WiiFit in particular, along with titles like WiiMusic and Animal Crossing. and that's only what we know at this point. plus i'm ignoring SSBB and Mario Kart--the "hardcore" games, but still appeal to the "casuals". that's the genius of the strategy, and it's only going to keep manifesting itself in 2008.
as of end of 2007, Nintendo still has way too many tricks up its sleaves. price cut, different colors, different SKUs, etc. quite possibly, the wii doesn't even need a price cut--new SKUs and colors would be sufficient to sustain holiday 2008 demand.
yes, people will continue to want Wiis, just like people keep wanting DS's.
the Wii is an epidemic.
