1. The repeated content is made different by its new presentation; for example fighting Bugaboom with the cloud suit is mechanically different to fighting him with the bee suit in Galaxy. Nothing is simply rehashed.
Did you get similarly upset when Gears of War 2 also had brumaks in it, or Killzone 2 had you fighting the same baddies?
And really, complaining about story in a Mario game? Go play Mass Effect if you want a story, or better yet read a book or watch a movie.
2. Lives system motivates you to actually finish something in a set number of tries, instead of the n00B-friendly endless lives system most games use, which emphasises grinding over skill.
3. There was a hub; starship mario it just wasn't large and boring like Peach's Castle and Delfino Square, where you had to wander for ages to get to where you wanted to go. This way, there's less time wasted traversing a tedious overworld.
@Wagram: people would treat your opinions with more respect if you didn't pull the fanboy card so often, and take practically every opportunity to criticise Nintendo.
