Because they are fun.
Some of the most fun hours of my gaming time has been playing pokemon, FFX, FFXIII, Oblivion because EACH one of them is fun to play in their own unique way. Each of them are RPG's and thats only scratching the surface of the genre that is so diverse and really has something to suit everyones taste imho.
But "fun" is an opinion in the end:
MY friend laughs at me when I tell him that I was playing the GT Academy demo for HOURS just to get a lap where I could beat my previous best laps timing by 0.05 seconds (to get further up in the worldwide rankings)
He laughed at me & said thats so boring
But I enjoyed the hell out of it. On the other hand I got bored of Wii Sports on the day I got it...but that game alone has changed the way this generation came to be.
