Well "spectating" I believe is just a replay that is downloaded to your Wii, I could be wrong here.
But I got online the past couple of nights, random games seem to take a little time to join, its always going to try to find the best connection first, if its too bad/too far away it just rejects the that as a viable connection, so possibly no one near you playing or their connection sucks that hard.
