@Siphilis: You know, it's for the market to decide how long life will a console have, not the manufacturer. Just at last gen, because of the PS2 dominance and earlier launch, GC and Xbox were DOA.
Of course Sony will continue selling the PS3 if it can profit by selling it and there are enough customers buying it.
But as soon as Sony puts out PS4, they focus their effort on the new system to sell it, so PS3 is dead by then.
I didn't quite get what you meant with the GC-PS2 comparison. Was it that you think all next gen systems are specswise close to each other?
