Yeah, Miyamoto confirmed that in an interview a short while ago, he literally stated there were 'over 240' stars to get in the game... I'm too lazy too look it up right now, but you should be able to find it easily if you google a bit.
However, whether he meant 121 stars for Mario, then the same 121 stars for Luigi (like in Galaxy 1), or over 240 in all for just Mario is unclear. I'd think it is the former, especially considering he mentioned only needing 70 stars to 'complete' the game (same as in Galaxy 1). An additional 170+ unique stars on top of that seems... unlikely. Although it would be insanely marvelous. 
We'll have to wait and see.
