 Halo 3 was very good for MS. They probably made a lot of money with it but it's not like Windows/Office where it keeps selling over and over. Halo 3 sales, like all game sales, degrade very fast with time.

 you have to also remember that they, bungie, is an external dev team from Microsoft's main software devs (windows/windows aps). Bungie's devs were 10000 times better programmers then anyone working for Microsoft's main branch.
