This is where you are wrong.
40 million people had a Nintendo because of Mario, not the other way around. That game was the reason most people purchased the NES, it was the must have item and everybody into electronics or with a friend into electronics wanted to play Mario....buying the Nintendo to do so was just a step along the path to playing the game.
Bundled games sell hardware. It is as simple as that.
