Meh, Slim is a marketing gimmick that loads of people fall for. It works for them so why not?

Did you weigh in on the 360 slim rumor thread/article to say the same thing?  Just curious; I haven't perused them.

Isn't it just so much more fun to wildly assume things rather than just bothering to see if they're true?  Have fun looking for my comment.

And what exactly is the gimmick that they are marketing?

The fact that the slim is so much better?  It is better but fanboys hype it up like it's the next coming of Christ because, well, they buy into the hype.

Don't get me wrong, I actually have one now since my old PS3 sounded like a jet engine and blue tooth devices didn't connect 1/3 of the time and it is better, but it isn't anything to get super hyped about.

People are more excited that it's the Slim and not about any of the actual improvements actually made.  Before we knew anything about it, fanboys were already touting the Slim as the console king because it was the Slim.  I'm sure they'll declare it an even bigger winner because it's even slimmer now.

Face it, Slim is the new RPG elements.

I'm pretty sure fanboys were hyping it up because it meant that the PS3 was going to sell a lot more than it currently was, not because they thought it was going to make the PS3 that much better of a console. Hence, why they were more excited about the slim than the actual improvements. Besides most PS3 fan boys already have a PS3, such as myself, so why would we get hyped up over such improvements that wouldn't effect us? However the sales improvement is something to get excited about for a fanboy. And considering the huge turn around in sales I don't think it would be considered too much hype for what it did.

It sold a lot more for two reasons:

  1. Price Drop
  2. People buying a Slim because it was a Slim

So yeah, your post pretty much confirms it is in fact a gimmick.  The only thing you're wrong about is fanboys not buying it.  Hell, when it first came out this site was overrun with people telling everyone that they replaced their old PS3 because it was a Slim.

Maybe we just have a different definition of the word gimmick cuz I'm still not seeing how it's a gimmick... The console was redesigned to be cheaper to produce(thus the price drop) and smaller in size as well as weight which are both very desirable attributes for an electronic device. It also uses less power and is quieter than the phats which are again desirable attributes. If some people have the money and can purchase another PS3 for those desirable attributes then that is not just a gimmick. If they were buying a second PS3 just to store in their closet then I may agree with you that it is some sort of gimmick but that is not the case. And even then the rebuyers are probably only 1% of the total market so they wouldn't be the group of people to brand something a gimmick or not.
