God of War III was developed for over three years by a huge team. I would say that's plenty.

As for Ratchet and Clank, I don't see this repetition problem that every reviewer seemed to notice. Space exploration with moons, etc. was new. The Zoni were new. Clank recording gameplay was new. Azimuth was new. Hell, it's difficult to find things in that game which weren't new.
