Well, actually Sony lose money on each PS3 sold... so generating hype about it might cause more PS3 owners to buy games, giving them more profit. When those people who had to wait for stock to come in are going to be more excited about the console when it comes out, so will buy a few extra games, so therefore generating more profit for Sony. Some of the details are a bit fuzzy, but this is the best summary of it
