How is it ridiculous? It's a phone that is mobile. Makes sense. Where the "cell" comes from I have no idea. It's another case of America renaming something unnecessarily and thinking everyone should follow suit or they named it first. It was called mobile phone long before you guys actually had mobile phones.

Cell = cellular.

 

I don't know what a cellular is so don't ask.

 

Btw, I recall Motorola invented the first prototype mobile phone and they are an American company. Wiki that shit sometime.
