no, in fact the public sex offenders database is there so you can protect your own children. In NY sex offenders must register - http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/nsor/ - and it is common to see fliers sent around the neighborhoods if someone moves into the area. People want to know if they are living near criminals and they have every right to know.
However, NY state doesn't make all offenses publicly available, and if you want other information you'd have to browse old news stories or public databases like the one I originally linked.
Also, this cracked me up when I was browsing the site - "Additionally, the Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) does not allow a sex offender to work on an ice-cream truck." (it was from the section on if you have to employ them, but I thought it was funny they pointed out ice-cream trucks explicitly)
