Google pay for being the default search engine in Firefox, so both Firefox and Google benefit from that.
Chrome also allows Google to collect more information about the user to my understanding, and of course, Google doesn't have to pay to be the default search engine.
I don't know about IE though (or what the case is for any other browser).
