I had Civ 2 (and loved it), and then got Civ 4 and loved what the did with Civ 4. I'm not too keen on hex tiles due to always playing Civ with square tiles, but I'm willing to give it a shot if really is an improvement on 4. I guess the benefit of hex tiles is that you can't go "through" an enemy line, but Civ 2 wouldn't allow you to move from 1 side to another side of the same enemy which allowed you to create diagonal barriers.

EDIT: don't know how many people read the article, but they are adding units that can attack from behind the front lines, which sounds awesome.
