9.5 Presentation
It may be another go on the same merry-go-round, but the music, the aesthetic, the strangeness and the horror remain ten times more arresting than any other mainstream shooter.
8.5 Graphics
It's not the Unreal 3 engine at its absolute best - characters still tend to be pudding-faced, for instance. The visual style more than makes up for technical shortcomings, though.
8.5 Sound
Excellent music, inevitably, but the voice-acting can be a little too B-movie, while some of the narration becomes grating.
9.0 Gameplay
As a game in which you kill lots of people from a first-person view, its mechanics are more interesting and rewarding than any contempory. In turn, this makes for an unusual but confident multiplayer.
8.5 Lasting Appeal
The story and characterisation feels a little too flat to warrant a second playthrough in search of alternate endings, but replays do mean you'll try out new toys.
