I agree to a that MGS did create the stealth genre on the consoles although i'm not sure if "thief" wasn't the first actual stealth game ever created. I do agree that the first game was innovative, i'm argueing that he hasn't really shown anything since as mgs2,3 and 4 are just rehashed versions of the original with better graphics and extras that could be found in other games as well. Sure those games had extras of their own like hiding on boxes, camoflauge , eating to regain stamina etc. but i honestly don't see it to be vital for the overall gameplay. In MGS3 i never used camo and got by just fine, in mgs2 i only used boxes and lockes as hiding places if the game needed me to but not because i felt that i had to in order to finish the game. MGS4 and the invisibility camo is a straight nocl-off from crysis as i see it ;P. but then again i might be just some gaming genius and have a crappy point of view because of it. You know which devs to me are innovative? For instance Quantum dreams as they are basicaly doing something that wasn't really done before, same with Nintendo and Miyamoto, even if we don't like the games the wii mote and some of the wii series games are absolutely fanstastic. So i'm really waiting to see if devs have anything special for wii motion + or Natal as that could be a total rejuvanation of gaming as we know it.

Metal Gear on consoles come with the concept of avoiding "combat" in action games years before Thief and original MGS. Thief and MGS both come on the same year, but I don't consider Thief "stealth" in the real sense. You just stick to shadows and that's it. MGS managed stealth elements much better.
Also MGS4 octo camo as a Crysis ripoff? These things have completly different functionality... Each MGS had something new and revolutionary over it's predecessor. Just because you don't feel that the impact was as dramatic as the first iteration, doesn't mean it's a fact. If you had no need to use given game mechanics in MGS 2, 3, 4 than I suggest you to tune up the difficulty, your experience will be different.
Innovation doesn't allways have to come with some incredible flashy news. Sometimes it's the little thing that was done hundred times before, but with an undexpected angle. One of the last instances of this can be seen in Demon's Souls and the way they integrated ingame FAQ and communication.
