well, to be fair the SNES controller is only digital buttons, smaller, and lighter, which tends to be more robust compared to a bigger, heavier, more complicated device (wireless, analog, batteries).
So no real surprise that a smash on the floor broke it. I'm sure they could have made it harder to break, but they shouldn't have to account for people smashing it (unlike the Wii remote which can slip out of someone's hands)
