well, to be fair, he only provided sales for the mainline super mario platformer franchise. If we count everything with the name mario and use VGChartz as our source (makes sense since we are on the website) Mario has sold ~385m compared to Pokemon coming in around 180m (obviously missing some sales as it is 13m low compared to Nintendo's statements)
So as a semi fair comparison
Mario = 385m / 29 years = 20.26m/year
Pokemon = 193m / 14 years = 13.78m/year
Just this year we have
Mario = ~24m
Pokemon = ~10.3m
