1) Its just PR, SONY wanted more sales but won't admit it (yet)
2) SONY cares about how many they sell to retailers
3) It was an experiment about digital distribution only
4) Its making a profit
Because of the above four reasons SONY has be happy with the PSP Go -- sure they wanted it to do better. Maybe they expected to it sell better aswell, but atleast it gives SONY some experience with making a download only handheld. It teaches them how retailers will react to it, how consumers will react to it, What consumer buying habits are like, how to deal with publishers about putting full versions of games online, etc.
As such i hope that next gen SONY it able to create a better PSP2 based off what they have learnt with both the PSP-1000(to 3000) and PSP Go models.
