Give it a shot; it holds up incredibly well, far more than the NES and Gameboy versions. Get it on an emulator at least, to see if you'll like it: I suspect you will.

And the NES titles are still awesome! I've been playing them for the first time since I was a kid recently, and I love em (yeah, Zelda II too). Maybe it requires a love for the NES type of games... I thought I grew out of it, but Mega Man 9 clearly showed me otherwise.

I haven't played A Link to the Past in over a decade, so I'll be revisiting that soon, as well. I'm sure I'm in for a treat - love it when I haven't played a classic in forever, it's like a new game all over again.

No disagreement here: to be honest, I want the new Zelda to take a page from the original Zelda's playbook. But I think Link to the Past has aged better, because it's closer to what most new gamers expect from a Zelda title: it at least hints at what to do next, it's not brutally difficult (although it's still more challenging than any 3D Zelda), and it basically has all the items Ocarina players have come to expect.

 The way I eventually managed was by playing through Ys III, then coming back to Zelda II.

Also, practicing. Lots and lots of practicing.
