Your riddle has me stumped too, in point of fact.

Lanterns and beehives have creases, folds, and openings. Same with lightbulbs.

Here is a hint: what TOlkien is describing has none of those things

I'll assume the "golden" isn't metaphorical, or it's a really shitty riddle, because the whole thing is a metaphor.
