I get that same message often. Sometimes it takes 2-3 invites in a row before I can get in, sometimes I just give up. Other times, I accept an invite, I get into the party, and all of a sudden I get a message telling me the Party is no longer active or something similar. Having said all that, it still works properly most of the time...
