Honestly, I don't think we've ever had a "one's enough" console post-NES.  PS2 probably comes closest though (closer than SNES or PS1 imo).

I usually get the console that best complements the PC. Last gen I thought it was PS2 for the football, RPG and fighting games. This gen I thought it'd be Wii, and to a certain extent it was/is, but when it comes to traditional console games (non-nintendo) it's lacking. I have to admit, I skipped the NES (had an Amstrad CPC 464 and then jumped straight SNES & PC) so I can't comment on its library.
