The problem with the Wii in Japan is really that many people have it already.
The DS has multiple per household advantage, and also duplicated ownership based on multiple versions. Right now there's only one Wii(not counting colors), so who knows? I think software could get a bigger boost, but until Nintendo offers something new out of the system, could be a redesign of some sort, or a small change like taking out the external power supply, then I'm not holding my breath over massive sales for a while.
