An important factor was that they mostly had US customers, so they were paid in weak dollars for their work and had to pay their employees and other costs in strong Euros.

Don't think that would really affect it since the customers have to pay what they charge whether it be in dollars, yen or euros.

or in other words, people are assuming that they were payed royalties rather than a flat rate. If they were paid a flat rate, then it was poor management skills, if they were paid royalties than again it was poor management skills and poor sales.
