I'd try to defend this with the idea that, like the film industry, someone at Namco had the 'bright' idea to counter-program the Mario juggernaut w/ an RPG (think opening a RomCom against the latest action blockbuster) but, yeah, I'm not really sure that strategy can actually work in the video game sphere where games are 4-5x as expensive as a movie ticket and have a much narrower audience.
