SMB3 is the greatest Mario game of all time (just edges SMW for me), although it's not my favorite game of all time. It blows away all the 3D Mario games.
Nostalgia is definitely a factor. People even like bad old games if they played them as a child. However, those who argue "nostalgia" whenever someone says they like an old game better than a newer one should answer two pertinent questions:
1. Is there not also a feeling present in many current gamers, yourself possibly included, that older games suck because they are old? Is this not the reason why many current gamers (young 'uns for the most part) pooh-pooh 2D graphics and non-licensed soundtracks?
2. What do you say to someone (myself included) that can pick up an old game they've never played before and like it? Is that nostalgia? If I play Little Samson for the first time 15 years after it came out and like it, is that because of nostalgia?
