Well the other thing is by next-gen, the DS2 will probably be as powerful as the GCN/Wii, who knows maybe if more powerful if those Nvidia Tegra rumors are true.
So Nintendo will have two platforms more than capable of running both 2D and 3D Marios. And both will need new Mario games.
So ... it's win-win for everyone. Maybe next-gen the Wii 2 gets a 3D Mario first, the DS2 gets a 2D Mario, and then they switch for the sequels.
There's no way in hell DS2 won't have its own brand-new Mario (2D, 3D, both) after NSMB DS has sold almost 20 million copies. It's not just about the Wii.
