Jumpin said: Suffice to say, these guys didn't play these games in any amount of depth, otherwise Dragon Quest 3 would be no lower than top 10, probably top 5. Other classic NES games wouldn't rank so low.
Putting Dragon Quest 3 at 96 is the equivilent of putting Final Fantasy X at 96 on a PS2 list. |
because your opinion and tastes constitute empirical evidence right? Personally of nes rpgs I'd take the Ultima's over dragon warrior anyday but that's just me (note I liked Wrpgs before it was decided by the interweb that they were better than the completely different jrpgs for no reason)
this is a subjective list, noone should think it is perfect as it is a culmination of opinions
anyway I wonder if any of koei's insane strategy games will make the list

Do you like apples?
I hadn't realized we had pretentious Dungeon of Dragons nerds on this board. If you prefer tedious dungeon crawlers with a single plot point "defeat the evil wizard Modin and free the world" without a real magic system (they're just consumable items), a terrible UI which makes even the first Dragon Quest look brilliant, only one character, and a grinding slow pace, then by all means have a cookie!
Dragon Quest 3 was not only the top selling RPG on the NES, but the top selling RPG until Final Fantasy 7. Unlike Ultima, it actually had a remmake which sold over 15,000 copies (The 96 remake sold 1.36 million nearly 10 years later, and the 2001 GBC port sold 810,000), it was voted by Famitsu magazine readers as the third best game of all time in 2006. In Japan, Dragon Quest III was so popular that the government was forced to outlaw the release of future Dragon Quest games on weekdays. Dragon Quest III's GBC port of the 15 year old game at the time also received an 87% average from review sources; including being one of the very few games to receive a 10/10 from IGN, which is incidently the same site that rated the game #96 on their top 100 list.
How do you like them apples?

Apparently you missed smokedhostage's Lawful good thread, anyway the nes ultimas are exodus, quest of the avatar, and warriors of destiny, not the first game, so your comments are irrelevant about gameplay and story
plus have you actually looked through the portable reviews from IGN? 18 games have a perfect score including Joust, and probably by someone not making the top 100 nes game list
furthermore the sales are basically null as how many of them are out of Japan, 90% or so? IGN is a western site, not Japanese, while dragon quest maybe big in Japan, it just isn't in the west
