Exactly, the PS3 combined software and a price cut to spur sales. However, it didn't even have any big software come out recently, so it went almost solely off of the effect of its price cut. The PS2 often didn't sell that amazingly in the months leading up to the holiday season, but it also sold more steadily throughout the year (sales in October were similar to sales in the rest of the year excluding December). The fact that you have to resort to saying my claims don't hold my water just shows how desperate your arguments are. The games I listed didn't even have to boost sales by a huge amount, but they should have at least provided boosts that lasted more than a couple of weeks. Pretty pathetic really. If a 2D Mario hasn't been released on a home console for a long time, that's exactly why it doesn't have a home there. 2D Mario games were released consistently on the Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and DS. It sold millions regardless of console, and the success of the DS led the series to even greater heights on handhelds. However, it's been forever since there's been a 2D Mario on a home console. The market just isn't there as much, and even if it starts, it won't be anywhere near as big. NSMB Wii could definitely sell some consoles, but your stubbornness has led to you seriously overestimating the impact of software (and the game specifically), and severely underestimating the importantance of price.

  No they had a hardware revision and software, that was far more important than the price cut, actually it did have Gundam and Vesperia, which are pretty popular in japan, probably not enough to sustain, but it was enough to give it a good boost for a month or so. No, I only say your claims don't hold water, because they aren't gelling with the facts on the ground, you keep saying price cut, while ignoring the new hardware revision and software. Sure PS2 was more steady, because they had a more steady stream of software, as they had more third party support, again software, not price No, its more because Nintendo was deluded into thinking that 3D>2D, like most of the gaming companies, but have you noticed how Mario 3D titles have never sold as much as the 2D, not even close in most cases, its because the marker that 2D mario appeals to, doesn't necessarily transfer over to 3D, Nintendo finally figured it out, which is why NSMB Wii is coming, better late than never.

Except you're missing the point. If Sony were to release a slim PS3 that was the same price, and there were a couple of mildly big games released at the same time, the PS3 wouldn't have received nearly as big of a boost as it had. You know this to be true just as much as I do, and denying it only makes your claims and your argument not hold any water. You keep saying that the price cut didn't matter, while I keep claiming that it's a combination of things (and a price cut definitely made an impact). Facts are on my side. The PS3 sold nearly twice as much hardware in Japan in September of 2009 than it did in June of 2008. For comparison however, June 2008 saw the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, which combined sold more than all software combined in September of 2009. However, even those 2 games could barely hold PS3 hardware high for more than a week or two. Additionally, I could pull up months like this one where there was nothing big released for the PS2 but a single soccer game, and it still sold a little over 30k weekly. Continuing to believe that price doesn't matter is just some dreadful delusion, and it's making arguing with you akin to arguing with a brick wall.

You can't say that, because, we can't look into an alterntate universe where there was no price cut and see the sales, however we can look at the Wii which had a price cut, but no new hardware and no system selling software, and extrapolate that the software and the new hardware was the real cause of the PS3 sales boost in Japan. So no, I'm afraid that it wasn't the price cut that moved PS3 sales.

 

Your examples are only software, and not even necessarily system selling software, but no new hardware, so you haven't yet supported your argument, this was a total hardware revision along with new software, the price cut wasn't the big factor
