No. Mario Galaxy does not equal NSMB in any way beyond the cast.

2D mario and 3D mario are completely different. Especially when the commercials hit showing the 4 player coop.

But Mario is Mario, whether 2D or 3D

A 2D Mario is a much more accessible game to the mass consumer.
