I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't taken any legal action on copyright of the world layout, but then again it would be a hard sell probably. When I first saw it I was thinking it was a complete ripoff (that I would still buy), but after looking into it more you see more variations.
Also, Nintendo doesn't pay attention to competitors games, as proven by Miyamoto when talking about Galaxy
