Well, the "core function" of the Wii (or any game console) is for people to play games, which I argue would be pretty difficult without a controller.  But I've already edited my post regarding that issue.  As for the rest...

exactly, it would be difficult, but it would still be possible. You could theoretically play any wii game with a keyboard or analog stick, or even with speech. The motion sensor is simply input, as is everything else. You do not need a wii mote to play.

Yes the wii is designed to play games. In order for the wii to play games you need the mobo, the processor, the ram, and some internal memory. Nothin else is needed, BUT all the peripherals enhance that core and completes the product.

No, it would not be possible.  The only thing the Wii can do without a Wii Remote is turn on/off, and accept/eject discs.
