I know lots of hardcore gamers that have a Wii ... they just happen to own a 360 or PS3 as well, but almost everyone I know has a Wii regardless of demographic.
When Nintendo is ready to release a higher-end version of the Wii with next-gen processing power and whatever new control gizmo they come up with -- I think the audience will be there and so will the third party community (this time from day 1).
With the Wii, Nintendo really had to lay a lot of the infastructure, I see Wii 2 as being the point where the can really grow their "city". With the current Wii, I just think it's too much to ask Nintendo to get every single audience.
In a lot of ways I think the current Wii is basically a test run for Wii 2. I suspect Wii 2 will be a console that more hardcore gamers are pleased with, and that some of them may even opt to christen as their primary console of choice next time out.
Any way you slice it, Nintendo is in a much better position now than at any point during the GameCube days.
