Here I will contribute.
It does matter that GC and N64 got beat up last gen, it matters a lot. Just look at 3rd party support. The N64 things started going down hill, the Gamecube was almost completely ignored, and now Wii, even though it's selling like mad, has to fight for every little scrap of 3rd party support.
It does matter if Ps3 loses, because 3rd party support has steadily been going down this entire generation, I can't think of too many truly great PS3 exclusives outside of MGS4 from third parties while as with PS2 there were more games than you could count, and sales have been down, down a lot, for 3rd party software on the system.
It also matters that PS3 is coming from a very successful predecessor, if PS2 was on a downhill trend from PS1, PS3 would not see nearly as much support as it is now.
Sony is living on brand power from last generation, it's the one thing keeping them alive. Nintendo on the other hand, has to build up that brand to appeal to 3rd parties more. |

But check the PS3 & Gamecubes library & what the hardcore gaming media feel.
Gamecube was still seen as a console with not many great games......while PS3 isn't seen that way.
Gamecube being 3rd did matter.....for PS3 thanks to Ps2 it didn't matter. YOu might say it had "plenty" great games
but it lost tons more as it was in 3rd place......with the PS3 that didn't really happen, once again, thanks to Ps2 Daddy!

looking at your gamecube library & then your Ps3 library are you sure you don't agree with me?
they were both 3rd place consoles......we can see which one you supported more.
Its library of 3rd party games is extremely limited......because of low sales.
So it does matter that it was in 3rd place......for PS3 it doesn't anymore thanks to xbox 360 being its "twin" & wii being a different ball game in terms of developing games.

I had more Xbox games than Gamecube games, yet I prefer the Gamecube. I have less PS3 games than 360 games yet prefer PS3's library...
