Wii sales have dropped in Japan every year YoY since 2007 actually.

2009 is trending to be the lowest year for the Wii in Japan.

The Wii has been in some trouble in Japan for a while I think, it was just masked by the fact that the PS3 was doing so much worse and Wii Fit carried the system through most of 2008.

A success, healthy platform does not having declining sales from year 2 to year 3 to year 4 of its console cycle. It should be accelerating not decelerating.

Lack of Pricecut for 3 years will do that to a console.

Wait to see what the pricecut does before saying the Wii isn't successful for healthy.

Regarding success... it has made nothing but profit for Nintendo since release, its already VERY successful.

Price cuts tend not to have as much of an impact in the Japanese market (historically).

In JAPAN the Wii situation is not healthy. Even Iwata has said that.

Personally I think Nintendo missed the boat with this one, they had great momenteum in Japan in 2007, and did not tighten the screws in 2008. With the DS you see the system exploded between 2005 (second year) to 2006 (third year) .... they really ramped up the releases.

With Wii this did not happen and now I think they are paying the price for it in Japan. Things like Monster Hunter 3 and NSMB Wii needed to be out *last year* in Japan.

It's not all of Nintendo's fault ... the console business has certainly declined in Japan and third parties deserve a lot of the blame for not supporting the system earlier on. But at this point, I think the damage is done.

All i can say about that is... wait and see.

Im sure you will be surprised.

Well Monster Hunter 3 + black Wii + Wii Sports Resort only provided a temporary boost.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii better be able to lift the platform on its shoulders and increase sales to a baseline of at least 25-30k a week for at least a few months. I think that's a tall order though.

The problem with all this I think is these new releases are intended to "shock" the Wii market in Japan back to life. It's like CPR to a person who's not breathing.

The issue here though is what Nintendo has done is its like waiting 20 minutes before giving someone CPR. There's a good chance you've waited too long.

Nintendo basically had nothing for the first six months of the year and "droughts" like that cause huge damage to a platform. They bet the farm last year on Wii Music and a piss poor effort in Animal Crossing on Wii, and when that didn't pan out, they had nothing.

Like i said.

Wait and see, im sure you will be surprised.
