I dunno, i think Serah could also probably die quite early on in the game.
In the trailer where Jill was revealed, there is a funeral happening and she is saying "For every task, a perfect tool".
Maybe killing Serah will bring Lightning to her and the fal'Cie. When she says it, Vanille is also there... maybe a betrayal later in the game?
They aren't from a royal family of any kind, as far as i know.
Lightning was in the Cocoon military. So i doubt she will be a royal.
