The PS3 was nearly $700 (>600USD) here until recently. That is a large chunk of change to spend on something that is just for entertainment.
Also i'm not sure what the big deal is about the PS3 passing the Wii in Italy and Spain. They are huge Sony strongholds and as far as I know they are two countries where Sony has already had the lead this generation despite the earlier release of the Wii.
edit: PS3 has also been leading Other EU for most of the gen with the Wii only catching it very recently.
