I had very few problems playing SM64 apart from the first 20 minutes trying to get the camera to work (I expected it to be like the Windwaker camera, which is awesome)
I don't remember many parts I found particularly difficult in SM64, although the last boss was certainly trickier than last one in Galaxy (though the level before the final fight is easier in 64)

It's mostly in later levels. Tall, Tall, Mountain and Tiny-Huge Island have some that are pretty annoying, and there are a few in Wet-Dry Land as well. Rainbow Ride has a few challenges, and do not even get me started on Tick Tock Clock...

Yes Tick-Tock was tough, but I didn't find Tall Tall Mountain or Tiny Huge difficult.... and only the 8 red coins troubled me on Wet-Dry.
I think SM64 has, on average, longer stars... whereas SMGalaxy if you don't fall off or something will generally take a little less time (or for some stars like the flipswitch type levels... hardly any time at all) but With Galaxy I found I died more. So in 64 you run further and perform a few more actions to get to the star, but Galaxy was still harder.

While that's part of it (dying will erase your progress), SM64 in general is simply harder than Galaxy is, atleast from my experience. As I said, partly because the 64 stars require more steps to get, if you die, you lose a lot more, so to speak. While in Galaxy if you die you've pretty much lost nothing as most stars pretty much just require the one step. Even besides that, you recieve a lot less damage in Galaxy (even relative to the 3-point HP metre), I've found.
