It replaces the "career" mode with a "story" mode that basically follows the Beatles from their humble days playing small clubs in the early 60's to major highlights of their careers like their first major show in the States at Shea Stadium, and the game also allows up to 3 mics so that you can sing the vocal harmony parts that are staples of just about every major hit by the Beatles.
So as far as those 2 things go, that's how it "recreates" the Beatles' experience so to speak.
Oh... and as for why people are making such a big deal about the game... did I mention that it stars THE FRIGGIN' BEATLES?!?
The two band-centric GH games, Aerosmith and Metallica, can't hold a candle to the Beatles, and the game is geared to a much more broader audience that the band has influenced for more than a generation.
