Actually, you would only need a tiny bit of data. for the friend list you would need an extra 20 bytes for each person over the internet, which isn't much at all. Displaying it also shouldn't be much of a problem either. Also, for trophy information you could just poll the data once every few hours and store it on the HDD, so you wouldn't need to download the extra 2KB for a large friend list on startup.

Have you seen how long it takes just to load up one persons profile currently?  Imagine doing an entire friends list at once.  Defeats the point if the info is not up to date also.

I have no idea how valid those numbers you posting are, all I know is the length of time it takes which isn't good at all.

The numbers I generated are from my own estimates of what data would have to be transfered for a simple layout on the main XMB and for a 90 person list. As for the "out of date" you could add a "force update" button. Sort of like how a RSS feed works. It checks on its own, but you can force it if you want to know the latest and greatest.

As for Sony's current interface problem, it just seems like they never optimized it. For dedicated hardware you would think they could put out something decent. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that they dedicate 1 SPU to the OS and they can't use more, or what the problem is. Honestly, none of the stuff should take longer than loading a simple web page. Or, they could just be lacking on the server side because it is free. It just feels slow and I can't see why from a programmers perspective it would be so slow.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
