...well I liked the list :P
No matter what anyone says the PS2 vastly widen the video game userbase, and deserves to be number 1.
I'd be scared to see where video games would be today if it wern't for Playstation.
(Try not to quote me to much, I know I'm going to get yelled at for this, but thats just my opinion)

First Generation: Very difficult to determine. Likely very low.
Second Generation: At least 36 million. Possibly a little higher.
Third Generation (NES): At least 75 million. Possibly a little higher. This is a 108% increase over the previous generation.
Fourth Generation (SNES): About 88 million. This is a 17% increase over the previous generation.
Fifth Generation (PS): About 146 million. This is a 66% increase over the previous generation.
Sixth Generation (PS2): About 196 million. This is a 34% increase over the previous generation.
Seventh Generation (Wii): So far 108 million.
It looks to me like both the NES and first PlayStation did more to expand gaming than the PS2.

Nice post, i agree with it completely.

Well, it's not really fair to compare the entire generation. Though, actually, the PS2 generation got nearly a 60 million boost from its competitors. The PS1 got something like 40 million.
The PS2 didn't expand gaming massively, but it did to a certain extent. That's not why it deserves the top spot. This is why it deserves the top spot (I know Metacritic is inaccurate, but for a vague idea it's great- everything is on one page, and colour coded).
