To put some perspective on SMG's sales:
- It has sold more than any Zelda game (NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, etc.). Ocarina of Time is the only Zelda game that's about even to SMG, but SMG is still selling and will surpass it.
- It sold more than GoldenEye on the N64 already.
- It sold more than any game on the GameCube period already, including far outselling Super Mario Sunshine already.
- The only single platform 360 or PS3 console game this generation that has sold more copies than Super Mario Galaxy is Halo 3.
Wii Fit/Sports etc. are phenomenon's that are playable for everyone, Mario Galaxy with it's 3D gameplay and gravity mechanics is not as accessible as a game. Plus the Japanese never really have taken to 3D Marios as much as 2D Marios ever. If more Japanese bought SMG, it would be more like 10 million sold right now.
Heck I think it would've hit 10 million anyway if Nintendo had given it a Players Choice status and Super Mario Galaxy 2 wasn't coming out. It would've sold steadily for a few more years at least, like Super Mario 64 got a chance to do.
