This holiday season won't be telling. What will be telling is January-May next year.

The slow season is when we are really going to sort the men from the mice with regards to how the two companies will compete at new price points.

But I agree that as off now all PS3 fanboy's excuses are off the table. The console must perform now and not stop performing, or it's all over.

Actually, this holiday season will tell us a lot about the rest of the generation.  If the PS3 can outsell the 360 by 2 million units in Q4 2009 (like the 360 did to the PS3 in Q4 2008), then the PS3 still has an outside shot at catching up to the 360 by the end of 2011.  Even then, the end of 2012 would be a more realistic goal.

If the PS3 doesn't make up a lot of ground this holiday, it is extremely likely it will be in third place by the time the next consoles come out.
